Isaiah’s Under the Sea First Birthday Party

After Lauren’s beautiful baby shower in May, I was in a party planning slump which meant I ended up putting off planning Isaiah’s birthday party until the absolute last minute! The whole party pulled together only the week of the event, except for the invite of course.

I took some photos in my office of my favorite decorations before the party just in case something happened to them on the day of. I got a little caught up in them and they probably don’t really go for a first birthday but I love them nonetheless.

But first, I want to share the invite with you! It was so fun to work with such bright paint colors! And make the simple ocean illustrations all fit together like a big puzzle!

And of course I had to paint up some Thank You cards to match! However, that did make me end up sending them months late! Just like this blog post, I’m always late nowadays! 😛

While searching for Under the Sea birthday party ideas, I came across this saying about the ocean and loved it so much, I knew it needed to be on display at the party!

I also came across these amazing glass bottles at Michael’s and of course I had to write all over it. I used lyrics from “Oceans” by Hillsong… it’s another one of those decor items that don’t really fit a kid’s birthday party but I just had to make it. My hands were itching to letter on this bottle!

One very important part to any kid’s first birthday party invitation is the “achievement poster.” I loved going over all of our boy’s favorite things, collecting what’s near and dear to our guy and painting them all out. He made the perfect model as well! I had no idea what he was going to do posing with a poster over half his size but his little faces looking at his mama’s work was adorable.

Finally, here are some photos from the actual birthday party day!

Our amazingly generous friend Anthony took the majority of these photos! It was such a relief to just be able to focus on Isaiah and not have to worry about documenting all these details! So thank you, Anthony!!

And that’s the end of that! It was here and gone within a blink of an eye and now I have a 15 month old! But seriously, when do we stop counting months? Anyway, the day was such a joy. I love watching our boy be loved on by his family and friends. My heart just overflows.

12 Month Old Isaiah

Sam Allen Creates Handlettered Isaiah Baby Twelve Months One Year

I went into having a baby knowing that the time would pass quickly. I had told myself that I would savor each and every moment along the way. Even the sleepless nights—but what I didn’t know about that was how it’s really hard to savor a hysterically crying baby when you are also so sleep deprived and hysterically crying yourself because you are an absolutely clueless first time mom. Wow, sorry for the sidetrack… but my point was this, now that you, my Isaiah, are getting older and we have somewhat got the hang of things, I have been savoring the baby left in you. The moments where you still need my hand to hold as you walk or the nights where you need to nurse to soothe yourself back to sleep. In those moments, I get a chance to hold you without you squirming away to start another adventure. In those moments, you are my little baby and I just don’t want to let you go.

Isaiah 12 Months Mothers Day

My boy, you are loved. I think I say this every month but every month I am amazed at how loved you are. And how much I love you. And how much you love me. The way you look at me, the way you see me… that’s who I want to be every single day.

It’s an incredible honor to get to be your mom. I am Isaiah’s Mommy. And I am so proud of that.

I am just so proud of you. Everything you do just amazes me. Or makes me laugh. The way you light up when you smile at me gives me every warm and fuzzy feeling… and then the way you scrunch up your nose for a “stink face” cracks me up.

This month you really started loving books. Especially lift-the-flap books. It’s so cute to watch your little chubby fingers work the flaps open and your squeals of delight at the surprises they may contain. You definitely have your favorites though, there’s only like 10 books that hold your attention and any outside of those you just squirm away and leave me reading alone haha

Isaiah 12 Months IHOP

Another favorite series of moments this last month took place at our local IHOP. You’ve fallen in love with the manager there. You break out your best flirting skills. A big “toothy” grin with a cute little wrinkled nose that can best be described as so ugly it’s cute! Or you give her your best smile and then turn away all shy when she smiles back at you. She’s definitely going down in the book as your first crush, hopefully her 11 grandchildren won’t be too jealous though!

Isaiah Pool Floatie

And of course, this month you turned ONE! We started our day at IHOP so you could see your crush. You just loved the staff singing to you and loving on you. That night we went to the community pool with just us and your grandparents, aunt and godfamily. And again, you just loved getting sung to but I think the real favorite for you was eating your first cupcake. Down to the very last bite haha

Isaiahs Birthday Cupcake

And speaking of being sung to, I did take a quick glance around during your actual birthday party to see everyone singing to you. It was only a quick glance because I was trying not to cry. There is just so much love for you that my heart just overflows with joy. I hope you always feel this cared for, this support, this unconditional love that surrounds you all your days.

And since this is the last month of these (boo hoo!) here’s a look back at the year. Wow, just wow. So much love for you, my boy.

And one last note… I am kinda glad these monthly photos are done because the challenge to capture the little guy before he crawls away keeps getting harder and harder!

Eleven Month Old Isaiah

You are growing up so fast! I keep mourning this fact but really each and every day brings so many fun surprises! You have such a funny personality, full of so many sweet little quirks that bring me so much joy! One of which is this new “stink” face that you give out way too often and at the funniest of times. Your little gummy smile still melts my heart though! Seriously, I become one big mushy mess when you give me that giant open mouth smile that lights up your whole face.

Poor little guy with his puffy eyes had a cold on Easter

Big milestone moment!! You took your first steps! I was so afraid I would miss this moment in your life. You’ve been on the verge for so long but you spend so much time with your grandparents, that I was so terrified I’d miss THE moment. So I’m ever so thankful for being the one you took those first steps to. I’m so proud of you sweet boy. I feel like you are going to do big things in your life (what mama does feel this way?!) and I am so excited to be cheering you on all along the way.

Of course, that same night, watching you let go of my hand to walk away from me led to moments of intense emotion. After you’ve clamored for my hands to help you walk, you soon won’t need them at all anymore. It’s led me to really cherish the moments where you truly are still my baby. Like during the middle of the night feedings and when you need extra help falling asleep. I’ve definitely rocked you to sleep more this past month than I have for the past several combined. I constantly feel like my baby is slipping away but I’m truly loving this big kid stage you’re entering.

You have a series of “tricks” that you do. I think we may have asked you to do them to many times because now if we start with singing “if you’re happy and you know it…” you will clap your hands, then show up where your ears are and then tilt your head to the side in the cutest little way.

You LOVE to eat. I don’t even know if I have ever really seen you get full yet! You have loved every meat we have put in front of you… starting with your dad’s Texas style pulled pork but you love his brisket too! With chicken not far behind those. It looks like you eat super fast, but you’re really just storing it all in your cheeks and then picking up another bite before you’re really done with the last one.

You still love to walk while holding our hands. And you can walk up the stairs with ease. Taking each stair in only one giant step. You are going to be such a handful!

You love to look in the mirror when we ask “where’s Isaiah??” The “mirror” also includes the faucet in your bath where you actually look back at our reflection with that big gummy grin of yours!

Thank you for always bringing a smile to my face and laughter to my heart, son. You just make life so very magical.

Nine Month Old Isaiah

Sam Allen Creates Handlettered Isaiah Baby Nine Months

Wow! This was a big month for our little babe! Isaiah is officially on the MOVE! After months of only being mobile by walking with our support, Isaiah [finally] can roll over from his back AND is scooting away away away! Of course, his favorite activity is still to walk around with our help. He loves being held but only if you are showing him something fun!

Isaiah 9 Months Standing

Other favorite Isaiah tricks: reaches for you to pick him up, shakes his head no—but for no reason, and he looks up at the ceiling when you ask “where’s the fan?” He also will sometimes talk back to you in conversation, but the timing has to be just right.

He likes to explore everything, if you give him a bigger toy, he’ll most likely flip it over and examine the backside and bottom of it rather than play with it like it’s intended for. He just loves to explore anything and everything. I think we’re going to be in real trouble when he really does start walking!

Isaiah 9 Months Sink Bath

All of these things bring such a smile to my face and warmth to my heart. All Isaiah really has to do is blink and I fall more in love with him.

Six Month Old Isaiah

I’m loving this age. Each and every day with you comes with new discoveries.

Overall you are one very happy baby at home. When we come get you from your crib, you give us the biggest smiles and you kick your legs in excitement. It’s the best and most joyous greeting. Sometimes it’s a race or an argument on who gets to go get you up. You, kid, are so loved.

isaiah-6-months-toesisaiah-6-months-bath

Admist all the busy-ness that you bring though, the calm sweet moments are some of my favorites as I know they are fleeting on your way to go-go-going! Like how you hold my wrist while I read books to you. Or how at the end of the day, just before you go to bed and as you are at the tail end of nursing, you stop eating and just stare at me with sleepy eyes. You stare at me until I smile at you. Your whole face lights up and we just stare at each other for a few brief moments before you go back to nursing. You may do this 3 or 4 times in a row but I melt every. Single. Time. Those sleepy last smiles of the day are becoming my new favorite thing. I want to freeze those moments and remember them forever.

Speaking of nursing, you require utmost silence to nurse. You give the dirtiest look to anyone who interrupts you eating. Even me! If I dare to try to take a sip of water.

Standing is your absolute favorite thing in the whole world. You stand up in our laps and open your mouth wide in happy wonderment saying “hey guys, look how big I am!”

FINALLY, we started you on solids just days before you turned 6 months. You weren’t totally sure about it (rice cereal), but you realized any food is food and you’re one hungry growing boy. From that very first time, you thought if you took the spoon from us that maybe you’d get fed faster too. We sure love out little Chunkers!

A few more things I want to remember:
isaiah-6-months-bath-toes– babbling has become very serious. You furrow your brow and talk with your hand very close to your mouth but only because talking is during a brief moment where your hand isn’t in your mouth
– everything you touch goes in your mouth. Especially your toes, to my absolute delight!
– first cold. Such a trooper. Smiled through coughing and runny noses
– loves blankets and all kinds of fabric
– sticks foot in my armpit while nursing

Five Month Old Isaiah

sam-allen-creates-handlettered-isaiah-baby-five-months

Another month has come and gone and here I am posting over 3 weeks late about our little man’s month-iversary….

The weekend you turned 4 months officially, everything changed. You literally grew up right before my eyes. You started playing with toys. You latched on to a monkey shaped teether (“Coco”) and a burp cloth to no end. You seemed to finally see the world around you and experience it in a whole new way. Now you just grab everything and in your mouth it goes. Even including my face 🙂 but I love your kisses!

If you don’t have a toy, then you like to fold your hands across your chest and kick your legs up. And then even that changed once you found your toes. A toy connected to your chubby little legs! How fun! And so cute!

isaiah-5-months-arizona-hotel-2

isaiah-5-months-bath-toes

You always want to sit up if you’re even at a slight recline, you struggle to sit up all the way and once I hold you up, then you want to stand. And you sure love to stand. It’s wibbly wobbly, but your face lights up with big boy pride! You look around at us making sure we see your new trick. I see it, I see it all.

isaiah-5-months-standing

Your dad loves to lift you high in the air. It’s a trick that’s sure to get those gummy smiles of yours. I’m always waiting nearby ready to clean up the spit up but I sure do love watching you two play together. The best of friends.

isaiah-5-months-grammy-up

Your sweet little coos have turned into deeper shouts and squeals. But we still hang on to every single word of those long monologues.

isaiah-5-months-bath

A few other random things I want to remember:
– holds bottle on his own-ish
– you love blankets, mostly to chew on but you love to play with them too
– I left you for the first time, for more than a couple hours (your dad and I went out on a Disneyland date night)
– loud noises still startle him, even from the mouths of little friends 😉
– Superman for Halloween, spent the evening at your godparent’s house and slept through trick or treating in the Ergo with Grammy.

Time is just flying by. I sure do love this age the best so far but I miss that little 6 pounder that fit so neatly in my arms. Everyday with you brings so much excitement, I look forward to each adventure!

Four Month Old Isaiah

sam-allen-creates-handlettered-isaiah-baby-four-months

Considering you will be 5 months old next week, I’m a little late in posting this. Thankfully I took good notes and wrote this out a few weeks ago because you have changed SO much since you turned 4 months. Every day brings us a new joy and discovery… but for now, I’m enjoying taking a look back on the month before:

You’ve found your hand, your fist and then your thumb. But you kinda prefer to alternate them all and end up with lots of eye pokes.
isaiah-4-months
For a time, you’d like to throw your right arm out and above your head, but end up with smacking yourself in the face. In just this past week, you’ve really figured out how to grab and hold things whether it’s a teething toy monkey or a blanket.
You’ve found your voice. Chats with you are my favorite. You rarely even interrupt but are always ready with a lengthy reply.
We heard your first laugh. It came and went so fast and I couldn’t wait to hear it again.
You’ve had your first Disneyland experience. Something I’ve been waiting for for as long as I can remember. We took you on Its A Small World for you first ride. Walt Disney and Mary Blair would have been proud! You seemed to like it at first, after all we are on a boat (another first!) and water is your favorite, but then your sleepiness kicked in and you kinda lost your cool. Your sleepiness overtook you for your second ride as well: Winnie the Pooh. Being able to take my very own baby to a place I’ve loved so deeply was so magical. Being part of the stroller pushing mamas, wow! I can’t believe I get to do that now!
You still get super excited about things and flail your arms up and down when you do. Add in your super big “crazy eyes” and we can’t help but get excited too! You love your Nemo jumper, especially when Sheldon the seahorse says a hearty “Hi Isaiah!” It almost guarantees your gummy bashful smile in return.
Bath time is still a highlight of the day. You’re almost growing out of your tub though so the kicks and splashes haven’t been as frequent! Now that you don’t hate getting out of the tub as much, snuggling up in your towel has become a lot more fun!
isaiah-4-months-bathtub
Being your mama, son, is a privilege and an honor. Why God chose me for this joyful task, I will never know, but I will never stop thanking him for choosing me to raise you. Your smile and spark are contagious. Your curiosity in the smallest of things, like the polka dot lining on the Boppy, makes me wonder and makes me so excited to show you the world.

Three Month Old Isaiah

sam-allen-creates-handlettered-isaiah-baby-three-months

Our little Isaiah is now 3 months old! It feels like so much longer than that yet as though he was born yesterday.

So much has stayed the same from last month… You still love your baths. You still take short naps, but now sleep in 5-9 hour stretches at night. Your daddy is still your favorite person in the world, but I think I’m gaining on him (little by little). Your farts can be heard from space and require about 3 diaper changes to get through the morning. Your little “laughs” and smiles still bring me the biggest joy….

What I want to remember about you most right now:
– your big gummy smiles in the morning
– your big stretches after nap time
– those big eyes staring out at the world when I’m wearing you in the Ergo (even if my hope was for you to be napping)
– the way you chew on your hands and blow little spit bubbles
– the immense joy you bring to your parents and grandparents
– the fun you have kicking your legs, especially when you get so into it that you flail your arms and scrunch up your face
– and when you do that kicking in the bath and splash water everywhere!
– speaking of baths, besides those morning smiles, your nightly baths are my favorite time of the day.
– and finally, I love that you see us now, really see us. Locking eyes with you makes my heart flutter.

You’ve had your first vacation, your first dip in the pool and the first taste of the ocean. You’ve been covered in more kisses than I could ever count. You’ve completely changed my life, and for the better.

You’re my little love, my stink butt, my joy.

With each month being better than the last, I can’t even imagine the fun in store, my love!

My Nautical Baby Shower

I’m seriously the luckiest girl in the whole wide world to get to have these amazing baby showers thrown for my little guy! This post is about my nautical themed shower thrown by my best friend, Amie! Her attention to detail was impeccable, there were things I missed in person that I only just now noticed looking at the photos!

Of course, she didn’t do it alone… I’m so thankful for all the girls who helped her plan, craft, and set up that day! And to her hubby for his help in “crafting” and her mama for watching her kiddos and more!

Every corner of the backyard was decorated, it was truly amazing!

This backyard may look familiar to you if you’re a long time reader…  it has graciously hosted many the event, such as Brittany’s lavender bridal shower and Amie’s cherry blossom shower.

Of course, we have to start with the invitation. Amie found these PERFECT invites on Etsy… but she let me address the envelopes! I was so excited to get to help in this small way!

Sams Nautical Baby Shower Invitation

Isaiah’s nursery is nautical themed so Amie used his room as inspiration for colors and the overall look. But she took is so far above anything I could have dreamed of. View her Pinterest board here.

When you walked up to the house, this table greeted you! Each guest was asked to leave me a message with words of encouragement as I enter motherhood.

Some of my favorite decorations though were under the pergola where the food table was… which by the way, the food was amazingly delicious!!

Amie’s husband BUILT the boat centerpiece. It was incredible.

How cute are these little boats that hung above the pergola! I’m still trying to think of a way to hang the garland in his room because they are just so cute and perfectly rustic!

And lastly, the shower favors were homemade bath salts! Amie bought this container of Epsom salt from Hobby Lobby and then followed the instructions, like adding essential oils to the salt, to make the bath salts.

One Month Old Isaiah

Sam Allen Creates Handlettered Isaiah Baby One Month

Before I catch up on my (amazing!!!) baby showers, and his stunningly adorable newborn photos… I wanted to post about my baby boy’s first month—since today is his one month birthday!!

Our sweet little Isaiah William arrived 12 days early and we couldn’t have fallen harder in love with him. From day 1, we affectionately called him Squishy or Monkey Toes. And on the rare occasion when we would get a glimpse of his eyes at high alert, Big Eyes. From all his extra skin that is just waiting to be filled with chub, to his extra long toes that can grab your finger (or even your lip!), to those giant charcoal blue gray eyes… we love every bit of him!

We also learned quickly that he likes to fart, and loudly! One late night while I was nursing him, he let one rip and Andy actually asked if I was the one that tooted! Oh no, that was your son!

He loves to stretch out as big as he can go, throwing his arms up high over his head with a big arch in his back. He hates to have his diaper or his clothes changed, I just think he’s a little modest—and I’m okay with that! He also hated baths, but is coming around to them.

When he gets scared or startled, he really shows us his Big Eyes along with all the wrinkles in his forehead. We all laugh though as it is the funniest face.

We’ve made it through the circumcision, a clogged tear duct and have begun the battle with baby acne.

He flashes us those sleepy grins which sure makes me melt. I think he might even have a little dimple above his mouth.

He loves to keep us up all night long. He struggles to fall asleep because he just doesn’t want to miss a thing! He’ll fight us for hours just pushing his head up with his strong neck to keep looking around. And even once he falls asleep, he keeps on making noises that may sound cute during the day but sure are hard to sleep through!

He’s taught me that a lot can still be accomplished each day on just a couple hours of sleep and one good 15 minute nap. He’s taught me to get ready for the day before he wakes and to never ever procrastinate because you just never know how long that nap of his will really last.

He’s fought over by all the stream of visitors we’ve had. They all graciously pass him off but only with the hope to hold him again.

He loves to have his hands by his face, even in the womb, and ends up falling asleep with the cutest poses that his mommy has to document. Each and every adorable pose, which of course change throughout his nap.

Due to his jaundice at birth, we learned quickly that he loves to be outside to feel that sun on his skin and the breeze on his face. If he’s fussing, he’ll calm right down outdoors.

After spending the first week of his life in one house, we then moved to our new house in the same town. He’s spent every night by our side in his bassinet but just these past couple days—now that his new nursery is complete—he’s been sleeping in his crib. That first night, he slept better than he had in days… I just held him close after one of his late night feedings, crying, knowing that my baby boy has grown so much in such a short amount of time. He truly is my heart, living outside my chest.

My sweet Isaiah, my little love, here’s to the many more months and years to come.
