Your New Friend Sam, Etsy Shop: Will You Be My Godparent Invitations, Greeting Cards, and Thank You Cards for Godmothers and Godfathers

Godmother Invitations by Your New Friend Sam - Cream Cardstock with Gold Glitter Embossing Upgrades

Nearly 2 years ago, a friend of mine commissioned me to make her a handlettered print to give as a gift to her daughter’s godparents. After listing it in my shop, I had a few requests to have “Will You Be My Godmother?” cards. Of course, at the time, greeting cards were not in my skill set—or so I thought—so I would decline those orders. After the launch of my bridal party invitation line last October, it occurred to me that I was now more than able to offer Godparent cards. Just after Christmas, I created and listed “Will You Be My Godmother/father/parents?” cards and they were more of a success than I could have dreamed.

I love selling on Etsy as it is a shopping platform that invites its customers to truly create something so unique. There is no hesitation to reach out to customize existing listings and thanks to that, I’ve been able to design some very fun and personal cards and prints.

With the immediate success of the cards, I thought to update my original Godparent poem listing with a fully handlettered poem to match the cards and list it as a Instant Download, Godparents Handwritten Poem, or a FREE download with card purchase.

Yet again, custom orders came in for the poem to be printed within the card itself. With that, a truly deluxe card listing was made. These are my favorite to make as they are mini works of art but in card form. From the embossed front of the card to the full length poem within, I can only imagine each godparent opening their sweet little card and accepting the invitation with joy. I can’t say enough how much I love my shop and the opportunities I’ve had from it.

Below are a few more favorites of mine, but you can see the ever growing collection of greeting cards here.

Cream Cardstock with Gold Glitter Embossing. Gold Envelope

This past fall, after some experimenting with embossing, I added some “will you be in my bridal party?” cards. They were an unexpected success… selling my first 100 in just 6 weeks. Rather quickly, custom requests starting coming in… with wording revisions like “will you be in my house party” or totally new card requests like “to my _____ on my wedding day”… with those new cards, and along with new color options (apparently navy is a hot commodity, next to gold!) there was quite an assortment to choose from!

Your New Friend Sam, Etsy Shop: It’s a Frozen Celebration

Frozen Inspired Birthday Invitation from Your New Friend Sam on Etsy 454

Now that it’s December and really starting to feel like winter here in Southern California, I thought it was a perfect time to post about my new Frozen inspired invitations!

Several months ago, I dreamed up a list of all the items I’d like to add to my shop, a Frozen themed invitation being one of them. Not long after that, an old friend inquired about having a Frozen themed invite custom designed for her daughter’s third birthday party. Divine, right?

I started dreaming up how I’d want the invite to look, but as I am not much of an illustrator, I called upon my wonderful friend Rachel, a student at University of California Irvine. And a very familiar face around this blog.

After giving Rachel a sketch and some images to inspire the look and feel of the invite, she went to town painting up the background of the invite on several pages for me to digitally piece together. I just love the look of these in person, the depth and texture to each layer of paint… it’s just gorgeous and so tactile.

I just loved how the piece came together and since we didn’t use the actual characters from Frozen, the invite can be created for a variety of winter themed parties and showers.

But first and foremost, we created it for a very special 3 year old’s birthday party… I love working on custom designs, the client gets to work hand in hand with me, getting a say over the color choices and overall look of the invite. We also upgraded the envelopes to a pretty “ice” silver. They were literally called “ice”—how meant to be is that?!

It wasn’t until I started to work on the lettering for the invite that I was struck with the idea of creating this same invite with a variety of type treatments to allow the invite to cross over from just being a Frozen invite to winter parties and showers. So we then created Winter One-derland/Wonderland for first birthdays and Oh, Baby It’s Cold Outside for baby showers.

Your New Friend Sam, Etsy Shop: Rubber Stamps for Shops

What I love most about shopping on Etsy are the personal relationships you develop with your customers and other shop owners. Each shop has a face to the name and although the shops create a market that span continents, it feels like a small little community!

Since Christmas is coming ever so quickly, I thought I’d share about a few of my clients that bought stamps from me for their own Etsy shops, and real life shops! If you have a moment, or two, settle in with a nice cup of coffee and check them out! Maybe get some early holiday shopping done!

Anyway, take a looksie around her shop… she sells handstamped jewelry with various sayings. Of course my favorite is Made to Create which I featured on my birthday wish list this year! As Lacey says, “I hope you find something you can’t live without!”

When the husband and wife team of Jolie Mae Collections first approached me to create their stamp, they actually liked this bookplate stamp. So they were the very first to customize it for shops! And it’s become quite popular ever since! So thanks Jolie Mae! Their shop specializes in wedding signs but includes so so so much more than that! I love their chalkboards that include mail slots and holders for other random items like phones. There’s a little something for everybody!

I know I’ve said this so many times, but I love when Etsy clients further customize the stamps to their own unique style and tastes, even when it was just to remove the circle around my popular circle shop stamp. Jessica’s shop, Just Frayin’ Around, has such cute items, and a wide range to choose from… unique clothing to vintage baby items and accessories! I love her monogrammed bloomers!

Friday Footnotes

footnotes-TITLE

Ever have those weeks that are just slow enough that for half a heartbeat or so, you start to question whether you’ve headed down the wrong path? That was me last week. That was me just this past Sunday. My Etsy shopped slowed from the frenzy of commuter hour to a nicely paced drive in the middle of the country. i.e. it didn’t even stop. But it slowed to the point where I had the mini-est of panic attacks, questioning whether or not this could really be for real. That the craziness of these past few months were over and that it was all a big joke that God was pulling. Well, all those doubts flew right out the window on Monday and we’re back to the juggling always multi-tasking day-to-day frenzy that my life has become. I must admit, I kinda missed this frenzy.

Soooo…. another week with no Internet finds for my footnotes. Uh, this may be like week 3 of me missing them, so let’s take a moment to see what I’ve been up to. Just a few sneak peeks…

1. Embossing [Anything I Can Get My Hands On]

A few months back, a very dear friend of mine asked me to design a bridal shower invitation. The theme involved the lovely color of gold…. so I asked her if she would want to try embossing the invitations. Something I have been wanting to add to my shop for sometime (but did I mention I hadn’t tried this technique in over a decade??!). So we get the invite design, rubber stamp made, and we plan a day to get together to create 50 invitations. Ugh, let’s just say, it didn’t work out like we hoped. But since I had all the tools now, I wanted to put them to good use—plus I discovered embossing pens where I can straight up right and turn my writing to embossed amazing-ness—which led me to embossing wedding table number cards, greeting cards, and whatever else I could get my hands on! Let’s just say, my hubby came home from a weekend of BBQ to a kitchen lightly covered in glittering gold dust. I snapped some photos and just listed these babies in my shop this week. Let’s see what happens next shall we? Whether they sell or not, I sure had fun making them!

your new friend hello happy birthday cards

Whew, after that long story, you may still be wondering what embossing even is…. using rubber stamps and a embossing ink pad or a pen that emits the special embossing ink, the ink impression is dusted with powder and then heated which creates that raised embossed link.

2. Hand Lettered Hang Tags

Another semi-new product to my shop are hand-lettered tags that can be used for gift tags—and personalized for name cards too! I love listing new items just to see what happens. After listing a set of 4 tags that would be for the everyday use with sayings like thanks, cheers, happy birthday, etc… I had a few custom orders come in with personalized tags for a bachelorette weekend, and then by a couple brides who wanted their bridesmaids names written and another just wanting their bridal party roles written out. These are the days where I can’t believe I’m getting paid to just write someone’s name on a tag. Humbled and shocked and feeling so blessed about this!

3. Full Calligraphy Stamp

I’ve also listed a few new rubber stamps… seriously, I really used this little slow period to get a ton of new products going! I had listed a full calligraphy address stamp some time ago but was never truly happy with the look of the design…. and then comes another amazing Etsy customer who specially requested the stamp and I really love how theirs came out! Using a kinda funky and whimsical writing…

4. Merry Christmas Rubber Stamp

Another rubber stamp just added to the shop is a Christmas one! Is it really that time of year already?? Okay, I may be a little ahead of myself, but I just started doodling and trying out the lettering and loved how the y in merry crossed the t and dotted the i! So I just couldn’t wait any longer! View the listing here.

5. Church Re-Brand

And last but not least, a non-Etsy related project, finishing up the big branding overhaul at my church. Well, semi-finished. Here’s a web banner, that we’re not even using anymore (don’t want to ruin the surprise of the new website!) just to give you a peek as I still need to photograph all the rest of the printed pieces. A time consuming, but oh-so-fun-and-worth-it project!

Your New Friend Sam, Etsy Shop: Wedding Vows Typography Art Printables and Prints

Your New Friend Sam Etsy Whimsical Handwritten Wedding Vows Kraft paper 767

Earlier this year, just over 6 months ago actually, I posted about a new product I had added to my shop.

You see, I thought I invented these things… making art with your wedding vows. In my head, the biggest challenge of getting this product sold would be just to raise awareness and make it “a thing.” But you see, thanks to Etsy, wedding vow art is very much a thing and  passing that hurdle was a breeze.

Now, after over 60 designs and sales, I thought it was time to share some of the photos of some of my favorite pieces.

These are probably my favorite products in my shop, what an honor it is to be given the task to create art with words that are held so near and dear to a couple’s heart. And whether it’s with song lyrics, or wedding vows, the words are always so beautiful… and even sometimes funny. It’s a treasure to be able to have such an intimate glimpse into these almost stranger’s lives.

And just recently, after developing a few clear lettering styles, I broke the listing down into 3, and then 4 lettering styles…

Smiling is My Favorite

And even though most want the classic black text on a white background, sometimes we get creative… one idea is white text on black chalkboard.

A Little Bit of Whimsy

With an uneven baseline, these handcrafted words are whimsical and feminine.

With Thanksgiving

Another style with an uneven baseline, but a little bit less whimsy. This one is new to the shop, and its definitely my new favorite. The style first came to be after writing a ton of “thanks” gift tags, I liked this new style so much, so I just had to try it out on a few vow prints with some willing customers!

Hand Lettered Originals

By request, I’ve added original prints as well, without the crutch of editing the final design digitally, these are always a challenge to get right and perfect but I always love them… the look and fill of the imperfections of pen to paper.

And this is totally brand new, just a couple weeks old, and by my own request to fill a frame in my house, white ink on gritty Kraft wrapping paper! And then right after that, created a black inked print on Kraft cardstock for a friend.

Client Photos

I really do have the best clients, especially when they send me photos of their prints hung up or on display in their homes!! What an honor!!

With all that to say, these sure do make great gifts. Most of the above are created by the bride for themselves as a momento from the wedding… but quite a few are purchased as anniversary presents to the spouse, or even as a day of the wedding gift! And one was created the week after the wedding, as a wedding present based on the best man’s speech! I thought that was pretty brilliant and may be stealing that idea some day soon.

I’m hoping to one day make more book quotes or bible verse prints… and even prints for baby nurseries! I think that would all be so fun!

Anyway, hope you enjoyed this extra peek behind the scenes at some of my favorite pieces, after all, Etsy only allows for 5 photos! What else am I supposed to do with the rest!
